Since getting more into finer writing instruments, many people have asked me if I have a favorite pen and why I choose the pens I choose. My answer on the favorite pen is a resounding yes, but my favorite changes depending on what I need to use it for that day.
Regarding how I choose a pen, it depends on what I am using it for. For example, I take a lot of notes for my job to help me remember conversations. I use different pens with different ink colors to help break up the information. But I feel the need to have different pens for different needs on different days and my favorite tends to fluctuate. Some days my favorite, which is a personal preference, is rollerball. Then I tried a fineliner and fell in love! Fineliners are ultra-fine tips and are great for taking notes – if you haven’t tried one, please do yourself a favor and do it!
This brings up the whole conversation about how thick of a line do you personally like? Do you like medium, fine or ultra fine tips. There are so many to choose from and honestly what might speak to me could be the worst tip you ever used! The tip sizes are on rollerball as well as fountain pens.
I do like a great fountain pen, but I am recognizing the paper makes a huge difference on the type of pen and ink you use. When choosing a writing instrument there are many different things that can play into your decision
- What size of pen are you wanting? There are all kinds of sizes not only in length, but also in width as well. In addition there are different weights and personal preference plays into all of these selections.
- Are you wanting to change out the ink? Many pens now allow you to change out the ink. Most ballpoint and rollerball pens come with standard blue or black ink. Fountain pens can have interchangeable inkwells that allow you to switch out many different colors. There are many sites out there that sell inkwells of many different colors of ink.
- Do you want to change up your writing style? If the answer to this is yes, then a fountain pen may be your best option. Fountain pens not only allow for different ink colors, but they also allow for different tips or “nibs”. Nibs are the part of the writing utensil that meets and touches the paper. Sometimes these are metal, silver or even gold! Depending the style you are looking for, there are all kinds of nibs you can use on your fountain pen as each give different experiences ranging from calligraphy nibs to everyday use.
I hope you found some helpful information in this post that helps you as your choose your next favorite pen. Feel free to share the why behind your favorite!
My favorite pen isn’t just an instrument to me but a way to capture fleeting thoughts, memories and intent. I chose my favorite because it feels like a natural companion that fits me perfectly!
